Introducing Cari

A conversation with Doshi Levien, the designers of Cari collection.

How would you describe Cari in a few words?

We would use the words “iconic simplicity”. One of the greatest challenges in design is to arrive at a calm, balanced idea that is immediately recognisable and expressive.

What are the main qualities that shape Cari?

Balance and contrast define the chair: structure and softness, precision and comfort.

The essential shell gives the chair architectural clarity, while integrated padding provides comfort and a natural, enveloping support. The lines are controlled yet fluid, and the chair is designed to welcome the body while shaping the space around it.

Versatility was another key consideration in our design process. We wanted to create a chair that adapts effortlessly to different contexts, postures and rhythms of use. It works as a focused office chair, as a conference chair, or as relaxed seating in hospitality environments. We imagined how the chair creates spatial rhythm and a coherent presence when used in numbers or larger compositions.

The recycled polypropylene shell and removable, non-glued upholstery contribute to longevity and responsible design thinking.

How does Cari interpret Arper's design language?

We recognised qualities of lightness and essential lines as intrinsic to Arper’s design culture. It is a language that is reduced yet expressive, avoiding excess while maintaining warmth. Sustainability is embedded in the construction. Recycled materials, durable aluminium bases and removable upholstery support longevity and circular thinking.

In which spaces do you envision this collection expressing itself most effectively?

We imagine the collection having impact in spaces where work and hospitality increasingly overlap. The chair sits comfortably in lobbies and lounges as well as meeting rooms and executive offices. It moves away from the rigidity often associated with office seating, introducing a relaxed and human atmosphere suited to collaborative and convivial environments.
