What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is an international standard recognised globally, that defines how an effective environmental management system should be developed.

ISO 14001 certification is not compulsory: it is the outcome of a voluntary choice by companies who decide to establish/implement/maintain/improve their own environmental management system. The standard does not specify environmental performance levels but shows that the certified organization has a management system in place to control the environmental impact of its activities and takes a systematic approach to achieving consistent, effective and sustainable improvements.
Since 2006, we have satisfied these requirements for the design, development and manufacture (throughout the assembly and control stages) of our chairs, tables and furnishings.

Why Life Cycle Assessment?

The LCA methodology applied to Catifa 53, Catifa 46 and Babar has enabled us to evaluate their environmental impact throughout their lifecycle by carrying out an in-depth analysis of each stage of the process. This encompasses the raw materials, extraction and treatment ofthe materials used, transportation, assembly of the chairs, packaging, distribution, use andend of life.

Life Cycle Assessment has also enabled us to compare the environmental performance of our products to highlight their most significative impacts and evaluate any improvements to be made.
Since we began to use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology as an instrument for environmental improvement we’ve obtained the environmental declarations for many of our products (Catifa 46, Catifa 53, Babar, Ginger) performed by International third-party organizations. We’ve been the first Italian company to request and obtain from a third-party organization the environmental certification for chairs.

Environmental Product Certifications

Some versions of Catifa 53, Catifa 46 and Babar collections have been the first products to achieve the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) under the Norwegian NHO system. All Ginger tables and some versions of Team chairs have obtained the International EPD® System under the Swedish Environmental Management Council.

In 2009 we’ve obtained the Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) environmental product certification for the following chair collections: Leaf, Catifa 53, Catifa 46, Duna and Palm. In 2014 also Saya, Juno, Ginger, Gher and Aava have obtained the Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) certification (only for polypropylene, polyethylene and wood shell versions with aluminum and painted bases).
We’ve also obtained the GreenGuard certification for the seatings of collections Aston, Babar, Catifa 46, Catifa 53, Catifa 60, Catifa 70, Catifa 80, Duna, Leaf, Loop, Masai, Norma, Palm, Pix, Saari, Sean, Aava, Saya.

Our Approach

We have an abiding interest in harmony: harmony between people and objects, and harmony between objects and their environment. These convictions hold true for both aesthetic and environmental impact. We do not, and will not, ignore our responsibility. At the same time, we must acknowledge the paradox between industrial production and its environmental impact. It is a complex condition. When it comes to sustainability, how do you separate fashionable posturing from earnest solution? A complex condition requires a complex, thoughtful response and re-evaluation.

Our first step was to create a permanent environmental department, in 2005. We developed an environmental policy ranging from the management of the company (ISO 14001) to the transparent and honest communication of the environmental performance of our products, which are evaluated according to uniform standards. We have begun to utilize the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which measures the environmental impact of a product from the extraction of raw materials, through the production process, to the use and disposal. This scientific method is the basis for the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) tag, another important certification that we have obtained for Catifa 46, Catifa 53, Babar and Ginger and to which we aspire for our most widely produced products. Many of our products carry the Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) and meet the requirements of the Australian Green Star system that evaluates the design and environmental impact of buildings. Finally, each and every seat Arper produces carries the international GreenGuard certification, awarded to products that respect U.S. regulations regarding indoor emissions. Environmental respect is not an imposed obligation. Our policies are an extension of the philosophy that governs everything we do, from the design of a table to the interaction of all those who sit around it.

  • Global Environmental Project

Our global environmental policy is expressed in a company-wide philosophy shared by the entire organization. Our aims to minimize its environmental impact through programmes that involve every stage of our operations. The long-term project we've undertaken is inspired by a strong sense of responsibility which encourages people to find new solutions that are compatible with the environment. The objective is to set in motion a virtuous cycle which includes and can benefit the people who work with us around the world. In addition to the studies that have led to obtaining the Norvegian EPD certification and the GECA certification for Australia, we have recently obtained the EPD® International System for all Ginger table and for some versions of Team chairs and the Greenguard International certification for all our chairs collections.
