Efficiency meets Wellbeing

An 8-story hub on an area of 15,000 square meters, ready to welcome up to 1.000 people, directly linked to the company's facilities in Milan. The new KPMG headquarters in Rome, close to the Termini station, is separated from its sister in Milan by only a high-speed train trip.

A project of a certain grandeur, implemented in the historic location of Federconsorzi and Ispra, an enormous building spreading across an entire block between Via Goito, Via Gaeta and Via Curtatone. After years of unauthorized use, the reconstruction began in May 2019, supervised by Progetto CMR and Progetto Design & Build, studios specialized in the design and implementation of large institutional and office complexes, and centers of training and education.

The renovation conducted under the aegis of the municipal heritage authorities has taken a conservative approach, updating functional quality but not the image of the building. The space planning has focused on a blend of organizational efficiency and personal wellbeing. The interiors have been completely refurbished in the wake of extensive demolition of the partitions, with the aim of boosting productivity and fostering cooperation in a complex company like KPMG, starting with the quality of the experience offered to the firm’s personnel. These priorities are also reflected in the use of large windows for natural lighting, the creation of small internal courtyards for visual contact with nature, and in the use of high-quality furnishings featuring excellent ergonomic design.

The layout reflects the vision and organization of KPMG, alternating “permanent” offices assigned to management and partners stationed in the headquarters with “nomadic” workstations utilized on a rotating basis by employees who enter the facility after long periods of consulting at the offices of client companies. The spatial organization has been shaped around the workflow of KPMG. Each level contains “support” spaces, designed for moments of sharing and interaction: project rooms for use by small teams, and meeting rooms open to clients. One entire floor has been set aside as a single, open area for extraordinary activities, calling for large gatherings of employees. From the Training Center for groups to meeting rooms for very large tables, from the refreshment area for small and large events to ample lounges with an informal tone.

But the space also speaks of experimentation, growth, future. As in the case of the “room to breathe” on the second floor, ready to adapt to the gradual growth of the organization. At the moment this area has no precise purpose, and is used as a place to test new working methods. With the same outlook on the future, the overall project is on the verge of obtaining the LEED certification, for its eco-compatible orientation.

The principles that have guided the entire project are also visible in the choice of Arper furnishings, as Massimo Roj, CEO of Progetto CMR, explains: “For the new offices in Rome, KPMG was looking for furnishing systems that would reflect the brand’s values: flexibility, functionality and understatement. The wide range of colors offered by the Arper collections has made it possible to interpret and personalize the various corporate services inserted on all the levels of the building. Versatility, durability and sound-absorbing solutions in the selected furnishings have enabled us to find the proper mixture of spatial solutions for the meeting rooms, informal areas and landings. This headquarters is proof that offices are still an indispensable expression of the values of organizations, and an extraordinary tool of communication and engagement with collaborators, employees and clients.”
